Gavā Old Town
Gavā has grown steadily in recent years, with the building of new suburbs, leisure facilities and utilities
However, this growth has gone hand-in-hand with the conservation of the old town and pedestrian areas have been created around the most important historical, cultural, and social buildings and spaces
Plaįa de l'Esglesia
One of the best-known and most frequently visited sites is the Plaįa de l'Esglesia (Church Square) and its surrounding streets, in particular Passeig de Joan Maragall, a major centre of economic and cultural activity in the town. Also in the Plaįa de l'Esglesia is the Sant Pere parish church, a building of particular symbolic value. It was built in 1945 on the site of the old church, burnt down during the Civil War.
Plaįa Major-Illa
The Plaįa Major is in the heart of the pedestrian area covering the oldest part of Gavā. The plaįa, surrounded by listed buildings, such as the Casa Gran, the Casa Planes i Creuhet and the Municipal Market, is the perfect place to stroll around, visiting the numerous shops and enjoying the frequent cultural activities held there.
Gavā Museum
The museum is housed in Can Lluc, an elegant residential building dating from 1799, in the Plaįa de Dolors Clua. The museum includes permanent exhibits, temporary exhibition rooms, a botanical garden, library, auditorium, classroom, research workshop and offices. The museum is in charge of managing Gavā´s most important heritage site: the prehistoric mines, the oldest tunnelled mines in Europe, which have been open to visitors since 1993.
Colˇlegi Salvador Lluch
This listed building occupies most of the block formed by the streets Carrer de l'Āngel, Carrer de Mare de Déu de Montserrat, and Carrer de Sant Josep Oriol. The school consists of two separate parallel buildings, with a playground in between. It was officially opened in 1933 by the then President of the Generalitat, Francesc Maciā. Four generations of Gavanencs have now passed through its classrooms.
Plaįa de Josep Tarradellas and Rambla
The Plaįa de Josep Taradellas was built in 1993, at the same time as the oldest streets in the town centre were pedestrianised to form an area known as the Illa del Centre. The plaįa is home to the memorial to the Martyrs of the Siege of 1714, and it is traditionally the site where the Diada de Catalunya (National Catalonia Day) is celebrated on 11th September. The plaįa connects the Illa del Centre with the Rambla, one of the towl's most characteristic streets.
Can Sellarčs
Between the municipalities of Gavā and Viladecans, on the Avinguda de Gavā, is the Can Sellarčs sports and leisure complex, a public facility that has recently been extensively refurbished. The old farmhouse is the base for a variety of services, such as the radio station Rādio Sellarčs, and also offers an indoor swimming pool, several football pitches, an indoor sports halls and a picnic area.
