West Gavā
The city has grown systematically to the west, with the building of housing and facilities
This work has led to the construction of subsidised housing, enabling people to buy quality houses at reasonable prices. The growth has gone hand-in-hand with the creation of services, parks and educational and sporting facilities.
La Bōbila Municipal Athletics Stadium
This is one of the most prestigious, best-equipped athletics stadiums in the Baix Llobregat area. It hosts major sporting events, such as the International Athletics Meeting, giving the town an international presence. The old brickwork chimneystack is an emblem of the stadium. Located on at no. 4, Passatge Elisenda de Montcada, the stadium has a six-lane athletics track, a grass football pitch, weight-training gym and multi-use sports hall..
Plaįa de Francesc Maciā
This plaįa is one of the biggest public spaces in west Gavā, with an area of 6,000 m2. Since its opening in 1995, it has hosted the Fira d'Aspārrecs (Asparagus Fair), large concerts for the Festa Major de Sant Pere and a wide variety of cultural and leisure activities, such as the weekly Tuesday market. Of particular note is the spectacular 150-metre long mural made of broken tiles and bronze relief, designed by the local artist Antonio Hervás Amezcua.
Plaįa del General Moragues
The plaįa is at the crossroads of Avinguda de Joan Carles I and Carrer de Sant Lluís and was built by the municipal company GTI in 1996. It covers 2,800 m2 and its most characteristic element is the 20-metre high sculpture by Antoni Rosellķ. The sculpture, weighing 10 tonnes, symbolises the sword and struggle. This public space was conceived as a memorial to General Moragues, the defender of Catalonia in the 1714 War of Spanish Succession.
Zona Esportiva Diagonal Swimming Pool
The swimming pool, in the Carrer de Sant Pere, next to Avinguda Joan Carles I, was opened in 1999 and, together with the athletics stadium and Jacme March pavilion, makes up the Zona Esportiva Diagonal sports centre. The centre has two pools, one for competition and another smaller one. It also has two jacuzzis and two saunas, a multi-sports hall and climbing wall. A wide range of swimming courses is on offer, organised by the Patronat d'Esports (Sports Board)..
