North Gavā

Gavā´s most important archaeological heritage site is to be found in the north of the town

The prehistoric mines, the oldest known tunnelled mining complex in Europe, have been open to the public since 1993. Entry to the mines is through the Can Tintorer farmhouse.

Can Tintorer Farmhouse
The earliest references to Can Tintorer, on the Carrer de Rafael de Casanova, date back to the 15th century. In 1985, the house was restored, with the addition of a new spiral staircase and the Sant Nicasi parish church, which is slightly separated from the farmhouse wall. Can Tintorer has an asymmetrical faįade, with lintels and jambs made of sandstone. The voussoir-arched door, made of the same material, is also striking.

Prehistoric Mines

This is the oldest tunnelled mining complex to have been discovered in Europe. They were opened to the public in 1993. The site was first mined 6,000 years ago to extract a variety of minerals, in particular variscite, a green mineral used to make jewellery. Given the site´s importance, the town council implemented the construction of the Parc Arqueolōgic de les Mines Prehistōriques, dedicated to the Neolithic period.
