The Carrer dels Mārtirs del Setge de 1714
The Origin and the Name
In medieval times, this road was the natural continuation of the modern-day Carrer Major, the road that went to the old centre of Viladecans, after crossing the Sant Llorenį watercourse. We know that in 1855 there were 17 houses along it and that up to 1933 it was known as Carrer Nou. In that year, it was named the Carrer de Mārtirs del Setge de 1714 (martyrs of the 1714 siege), in memory of the victims of the siege of Barcelona by the army of Felipe V. Under Franco, the street was renamed again, but with the arrival of a democratic council, its 1993 name was restored.
The Warehouse of the Lords of Eramprunyā
The Casa Safont-Gerona, at number 13, was built in the 17th century and was part of a larger building in which the lords of Eramprunyā stored the part of the harvest with which they paid the peasants. It was rebuilt in the 18th century to store wine, cereals, olives and pulses, and also included stables and a prison.
Period Balconies and Faįades
AAlong the street there are numerous buildings reminiscent of 19th-century Gavā, such as the Casa Rovira (number 30), where Dr. Rovira was born. It was built in 1887 and its first floor is an example of the sophisticated architecture of the period. Next-door is the house where Marcelˇlí Moragas lived. Moragas was a famous Gavā teacher, and a school in the town is named after him.
