Nature and Culture in the Parc del Milˇlenni

Iberians, Farms and Bricks

Human activity has been present around the park since ancient times. Iberian remains have been found on the Calamot hill, to the west of the park, where there was a village between the 5th and 1st centuries B.C. There were also smaller agricultural settlements, as shown by the remains of a silo and other objects found around the modern-day cemetery. In the modern period, the clay soil in the area saw the founding of brickworks. The first of these was already established in 1757, on the site of the modern-day municipal stadium (the restored chimney is still standing), and supplied the growing demands of the building industry in the country. Further brickworks were founded in the 19th century, to the left of the modern-day Avinguda Joan Carles I.

Landmarks of the Town

The creation of the park was accompanied by the installation of the Androgin del Milˇleni, a 15-metre high sculpture that is neither male nor female, donated by the theatre company La Fura dels Baus. The park has also provided Gavā with a new cultural facility, an open-air theatre named after the great musician and composer, Marc Grau, one of Gavā´s famous sons, who lived from 1955 to 1999.

A Rich Natural Heritage

Among the plants to be found in the park are carob trees, evidence of the park recent agricultural use (up until the 1950´s), and white pines with an undergrowth of reeds, which have reconquered their natural habitat since its abandonment. Among the pines are large oak trunks, associated with the community that lived on the banks of the watercourses crossing the park. In autumn and winter, the woods are the habitat of birds, such as robins, black redstarts, goldfinches and chaffinches. Wagtails can be seen by the watercourse and, at night, the owls can be heard. The nibbled trunks of pines are evidence of field mice and squirrels, while nearby, foxes and wild boar have been detected.
