The Marcs, Lords of Eramprunyą
A Family that Evokes the History of Gavąde Gavą
Two public buildings, a district, several roads and numerous institutions are named after members of the Marc family, who, between the years 1323 and 1548, were lords of the castle and estate of Eramprunyą, whose lands covered the modern-day municipalities of Gavą, Begues, Castelldefels, Viladecans, Sant Climent de Llobregat, and parts of Sitges and Sant Boi de Llobregat.
Knights and Scholars
In 1323, Pere Marc I bought the lordship of Eramprunyą and both he and his son, Pere, became royal counsellors and treasurers. Pere Marc´s other son, Jaume, became a knight and thus ennobled the family. Jaume Marc II, Lord of Eramprunyą and poet, was charged by King Joan I to organise the first jocs florals (literary contest) to be instituted in Catalonia. In 1375-6, he carried out building work on the castle, as is commemorated in an inscription that can still be seen on the castle stones. He also commissioned the Gothic image of The Virgin of Bruguers. But possibly the best-known Marc was Ausiąs, the great poet who died in 1459, a member of the Valencian branch of the family and relative of the lords of d´Eramprunyą
War and Decadence
In 1469, during the war between Joan II, King of Aragon, and the Generalitat of Catalonia, the castle was destroyed by Generalitat troops after a month-long siege. From the 16th century onwards, the Marc family seat was the fortified castle in Castelldefels (the modern-day castle). In 1548 Isabel Marc died, and with her the family line of the lords of Eramprunyą.
